Since January 2005 public bodies have been required to provide
non-personal information held by them, on request, subject to
certain exemptions. These can be requests for the minutes of
council meetings, information about bed allocations in hospitals
or requests for director salary levels, to name but three.
Many organisations will try to sell public organisations a
technological solution, often billed as a panacea for compliance
with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and whilst technology
has an important part to play, it is only a part of the solution.
The key to compliance with this Act is not to treat the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 as a single challenge. It should be
seen in the context of understanding the types of information
your organisation holds, where it is, how to get at it, who
is responsible for it and how to respond to requests for that
information. It should be treated as a whole challenge for information
compliance and be a part of a wider records management
strategy.
The Information Edge, with its partners, can provide
a complete package to enable you to deliver compliant processes
that adds value through good data management, which impacts
positively not only on FOI, but the full information compliance
needs of your organisation, helping you become more information
efficient.
